Cyclocross
Cycling Dirt is slowly becoming one of our most favorite spots for CX and MTN. There live coverage of Nationals last week in Eugene, OR was phenomenal. Here is a great recap of the 1 hour Elite race...it is only 23 minutes long and definitely worth the watch. More than 10,000 people in attendance, with more than 100 starters, including many of the racers from Kansas City.
Can't get enough CX, there will be more racing in January.
12/31 Cross off The Old Year in Shawnee, KS
1/3 Epic Holiday Cross in the Northland at Tuilleries Plaza(I-29 and 64th)
11/10 Grote Prijs Shawnee

Grass Track Rules!
The weather turned out beautiful for the grass track clinic last night. Lots of people showed up to learn about the sport and to get their upgrade number. Remember, if you do not attend the event this Thursday for the clinic, you may not upgrade and race in the Mass Start Scratch Race.
Things we learned.
1. Gearing. Many are using 42/19 or 42/20.
2. Tire Pressure. Anywhere from 35-60 is good. If you are capable of running lower, then more power to you.
3. Must have bar tape and plugs on your drop bars. Drop Bars only for the mass start race. You must always be in the drops during the mass start race or a dq will be in order. No exceptions.
4. Must have tubulars glued really good. Judges will try to roll them off at the start. If they aren't on their tight, then you can't ride them.
5. Must ride fixed, cog with lockring.
6. Chain and wheel bolts must be very tight.
7. There may be a show and go this sunday at the venue...stay tuned to Local Cycling for more info.

Grass Track Clinic Tonight!
Localcycling.comsays
Want to do some grass track racing on July 26th? We've got a freshly mown 333meter circuit for your enjoyment in Shawnee. BUT if you want to do the mass start event (Scratch Race) you'll need to be at least a Cat 4 (men) or Cat 3 Women for the USAC Track category. Tonight's program will be the ticket to get you upgraded for this event. Yes, you'll need an annual USAC license to upgrade, but not to participate in the free clinic (those are available online at www.usacycling.org as welll as complete Track Racing rules). If you're interested in doing the time trial events (500m or Kilo) those are open to all categories.
We'll repeat this program again a week from tonight, possibly on the new Track. TONIGHT July 16th's clinic is at Herman Laird Park on Johnson Drive in Shawnee. Bring your fixie or track bike, starts at 6:30 PM

Clinic on thursday.
Thursday 7/16 is the first of the safety/upgrade clinics to tune folks up for the Kansas Track Championships. These are critical to get riders prepared (and eligible) for the mass start event. Meet at Herman Laird Park in Shawnee at 6:30...for hands on and classroom learning. No fee.
If you go to the clinic, you get upgraded so that you can participate in the scratch races(crit style) and mass start races. If you can't make it, you may still participate in the Time Trial Events on Sunday, the 26th.
If you don't have a bike, I plan on bringing extras.
Email me if you want me to reserve a size for you.

Get your Grass Track Bikes Ready!
That's right, KS State Track Championships will be the end of July and there is no time to waist.
Many of you are well prepared but for those of you wanting to race and don't have your bike ready, there are a few things to consider.
1. You must ride a bike fixed, with drop bars, and no brakes.
2. You probably want at least 25c tires, if not 28-34c tires depending on conditions.
If you don't have a bike yet, here are a few options.
1. Rent one from us for the event. We don't have details yet, but we plan on getting a bunch of bikes out specifically for this event.
2. Find an old frame with horizontal drops and build it up.
3. Build a complete bike, definitely can be done for less than $600, or up to $2k if you want.
Prices for stuff. (These prices are for racers, we know you have lots of expenses to keep up with this expensive hobby and supporting the cycling community so we try and hook you up whenever possible)
Basic Rear 120mm Track Wheel. $70
Basic Front Track wheel. $60
Surly Steamroller Frame/Fork. (tons of tire clearance, up to 38c.) $350
BAsic Black track frame/fork/headset $180(clearance for 30c)
Tires
Maxxis RAze 34c(fits like a 32) $35
Kenda Kwick 700x30 $25
michelin mud 700x30 $38
Michelin jet 700x30 $38
(working on getting some 700x30 schwalbe as well.)

New Stuff.
Lots of bikes going in and out now, summer is in full swing. We are still doing free tune ups for 1 year and 15% off everything with the bike. Mention the blog and we may be inclined to knock 5% off your entire purchase!
The newest product we have comes from Chomper Body. They have gender specific chamois cream as well as embrocation and post ride massage cream.
Our favorite is the "Muscle Butter." After a good ride or race, just rub a little on your calfs and thighs. Takes about 2 minutes and you get what feels like a 20 minute massage. Using it on the back of your neck after a 70 mile race relieves a lot of pressure/pain as well.

SWRVE WWR Knickers Review.
The wwr knickers are probably my most practical piece of cycling clothing I own. They simply work. In the sub 0 degree temperatures they protect my legs from freezing gusts of wind while letting my bib tights breathe. In the rainy months of spring they shield my legs from rain and don't get bogged down and heavy full of water. In the hot months of summer they keep my legs ventilated while protecting my skin from the sun. And in the fall they make you look super stylish on one of the many Cyclo-cross Podiums. There is simply nothing these things can't do!
My favorite was showing up to group rides with them on in the middle of January. Wearing Bib tights is warm, but if there is any wind faster than 10mph then you are going to feel some chill. Bib tights are supposed to keep your legs warm and ventilated, so when I add the protective layer of the WWR's, the problem was solved. I still was able to experience proper ventilation and my legs were protected from the icy winds.
Now for the true test. How about over 5,000 miles of commuting in all climates and weather for 11 months straight and over 2000 hours of wrenching on bikes! If you can imagine 100's of chain lube stains, food stains, mud, gritty rain, they still look pretty good. After you see the pics above you think, wow those are worn out. Not Yet! All the stitches are still there, still fit perfectly, no stretching or shrinking.
I must say, after blowing out my old knickers in a month (old chinos I cut at the shins.) these are definitely worth the money. ($90)

Masi Soulville 3
This bike is the coolest bike ever!
For only $765 you get a sweet 3 speed cruiser with fenders that is also fast enough to keep up with group rides. I just took it to the post office and was amazed at the efficient pedaling of it. Even without straps or clips I was able to crank up hills no problem with little bb flex.
Why you should buy this bike.
-Steel. Very smooth riding, very compliant, and still light.
-3 speed sram internal gearing. No external gears to worry about, just lube the chain and you are off.
-Fenders are white and work very well.
-Wheels are silver hubs, black spokes, silver nipples, and black non-msw rims.
-QR front wheel for easy removal.
-Coaster brake for skidmarks.
-Saddle is leather and very comfortable, kind of a cross between a b-17 and a regal.
-White paint job looks awesome.
