Grass Track Rules!

The weather turned out beautiful for the grass track clinic last night. Lots of people showed up to learn about the sport and to get their upgrade number. Remember, if you do not attend the event this Thursday for the clinic, you may not upgrade and race in the Mass Start Scratch Race.

Things we learned.

1. Gearing. Many are using 42/19 or 42/20.

2. Tire Pressure. Anywhere from 35-60 is good. If you are capable of running lower, then more power to you.

3. Must have bar tape and plugs on your drop bars. Drop Bars only for the mass start race. You must always be in the drops during the mass start race or a dq will be in order. No exceptions.

4. Must have tubulars glued really good. Judges will try to roll them off at the start. If they aren't on their tight, then you can't ride them.

5. Must ride fixed, cog with lockring.

6. Chain and wheel bolts must be very tight.

7. There may be a show and go this sunday at the venue...stay tuned to Local Cycling for more info.

Grass Track Clinic Tonight!

Localcycling.comsays

Want to do some grass track racing on July 26th? We've got a freshly mown 333meter circuit for your enjoyment in Shawnee. BUT if you want to do the mass start event (Scratch Race) you'll need to be at least a Cat 4 (men) or Cat 3 Women for the USAC Track category. Tonight's program will be the ticket to get you upgraded for this event. Yes, you'll need an annual USAC license to upgrade, but not to participate in the free clinic (those are available online at www.usacycling.org as welll as complete Track Racing rules). If you're interested in doing the time trial events (500m or Kilo) those are open to all categories.

We'll repeat this program again a week from tonight, possibly on the new Track. TONIGHT July 16th's clinic is at Herman Laird Park on Johnson Drive in Shawnee. Bring your fixie or track bike, starts at 6:30 PM

Clinic on thursday.

Thursday 7/16 is the first of the safety/upgrade clinics to tune folks up for the Kansas Track Championships. These are critical to get riders prepared (and eligible) for the mass start event. Meet at Herman Laird Park in Shawnee at 6:30...for hands on and classroom learning. No fee.

If you go to the clinic, you get upgraded so that you can participate in the scratch races(crit style) and mass start races. If you can't make it, you may still participate in the Time Trial Events on Sunday, the 26th.

If you don't have a bike, I plan on bringing extras.

Email me if you want me to reserve a size for you.
